Odin’s Birthday!
Happy 9th Birthday Odin! We woke up to a rainy morning in Maine. The fog was thick across the lake and most of the kids slept in a bit later than they have been. The first thing Odin wanted to do this morning was go kayaking with the new paddles so the kids all put their swimsuits on and headed out into the rainy, 50 degree weather and jumped in the lake.

They finally got cold enough to come back inside shortly before lunch. The rain was letting up so we decided to pack some lunches and head to Acadia to make a ranger led hike on some carriage roads to see two of the most famous bridges in the park. The carriage roads were built before Acadia was a National Park by John Rockefeller Jr. They were quite literally designed for horse drawn carriages as a way to keep automobiles out of the area. The ranger leading the talk was great but very long winded - two mile hike took over 2 hours!
The kids were very engaged in the talk and helped the ranger with a variety of tasks. Odin, Ari and Ainsley were especially interested and tried to answer as many of his questions as possible. Finally we got to the famous bridges. The first we saw was the Hemlock Bridge and the second was the Waterfall Bridge. Since it had been raining all day, the waterfalls were spectacular.

After exploring the area around the Waterfall Bridge, it was time to head back down the trail. The return trip was only 20 min and then we had to hustle to get to the fish market in Bar Harbor before it closed. For Odin’s birthday dinner, he once again wanted mussels - the 3rd day in a row he’s had them! We picked up a few pounds of mussels, some Arctic Char, haddock and the Barnowskys bought some live lobsters to bring back to the house.

Odin could not have been happier with the mussels I made and the kids were all fascinated watching Dan and Cole cook their live lobsters. Everyone must have enjoyed their dinners because there was nothing left!
Instead of cake, Keely picked up some locally made Whoopie Pies - a Maine favorite - and Odin was thrilled! They were delicious! After dinner we opened presents and suddenly it was once again after 10 pm before we got the kids to their beds.

Definitely a slower paced day than usual but Odin seemed to have a great day celebrating turning 9 in Maine!
